Mercedes-Benz, ready to build medical equipment to provide support during the coronavirus pandemic

Mercedes-Benz is ready to build medical equipment to provide support during the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 28,000 people across the world.

Mercedes-Benz has offered its support with the manufacturing of medical equipment. Using high-performance 3D printers, individual components can be produced to serve hospitals that are in urgent need of medical equipment.

“With our highly competent team and years of experience in 3D printing technology, we are ready to make our contribution to the production of medical devices,” says Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, Production and Supply Chain. “We are in contact with the state government of Baden-Württemberg. Our 3D printers are definitely available”, Burzer adds.

The premium car manufacturer has been adding years of experience in the research and application of additive production for the past three decades. Mercedes-Benz is extremely familiar with the matter as 3D printing is a common procedure in prototype construction and small-series production.

Up to 150,000 plastic and metal components are thus produced by Mercedes-Benz every year and the car maker would be capable of switching to medical equipment production.

The procedure includes the digital building of the digitally developed components layer by layer in a “printer”. Plastic, metal powders and resins are among the raw material used for the creation of every three-dimensional item.

Formula 1 teams join hands

Furthermore, seven UK-based Formula 1 teams, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport being among them, join hands to help in the treatment of coronavirus-affected patients. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, BWT Racing Point F1 Team, Haas F1 Team, McLaren F1 Team, Renault DP World F1 Team and ROKiT Williams Racing are also part of the army that fights the coronavirus pandemic.
