SLS AMG COUPÉ BLACK SERIES: NOT THE LAST “BLACK” MODEL

While the AMG GT is already in the starting blocks as the sixth Black Series model, we take a brief look back at the last “Black Model” from Affalterbach. A corresponding model does not have to be painted black at all, but in any case it has two seats – like the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series with 464 kW / 631 hp.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series: not the last

With the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Black Series , Mercedes presented the super-sporty, high-end version of the gullwing model, which is based on the SLK 55 AMG Black Series from 2006, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series from 2007 and the SL 65 AMG Black Series from 2008 and the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series in 2011 was the fifth variant of the Black Series philosophy.

SLS AMG COUPÉ AS A BLACK SERIES MODEL FROM AFFALTERBACH

The Black Series model of the gullwing is already noticeable in the exterior design: with wide fenders with a plus of 13 or 26 mm (front / rear) on each side, you can create space for 275 and 325 sports tires. In addition, darkened headlights and black-tipped rear lights make the vehicle appear really aggressive. In addition, the front apron with carbon front splitter and a rear apron made of carbon with a diffuser, as well as the side skirts with carbon inserts and indicated ventilation openings in front of the rear wheels provide clear evidence of a technology transfer from racing. The wing-shaped cross fin and the star pot in the radiator grille are also in high-gloss black, as are the exterior mirrors and the fins on the bonnet.

The rear of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is as beefy as the front  :  the wide fenders and the striking rear diffuser dominate the view. The two chrome-plated double tailpipes with a square cross-section provide visual and acoustic proof of the power and dynamism of the super-sporty gullwing. Unmistakable yet discreet: the exclusive AMG logo with black  Black Series lettering on the top right of the boot lid.

With the AMG aerodynamics package that was available as an option at the time, driving dynamics could be increased even further. Instead of the standard rear wing that automatically extends from 120 km / h, a fixed and two-stage adjustable carbon rear wing in the style of the SLS AMG GT3 is used. The rear wing is supported by aluminum elements on a special insert on the boot lid and ensures even more contact pressure on the rear axle – not least thanks to the Gurney flap. This eight-millimeter-high tear-off edge on the rear wing, which is attached at a 90-degree angle, further increases downforce without, however, significantly increasing air resistance. The carbon rear wing is infinitely adjustable in the range between 2 and 10 degrees, just a few steps are required.

The AMG Solarbeam paintwork perfectly matches the dynamic design of the SLS AMG Coupé  Black Series . The optional color is reserved exclusively for the  Black Series model. Six other exterior finishes from the color range of the SLS AMG were available ex works, including the matt lacquer designo magno alanite gray.

PERFORMANCE-ENHANCED V8 VACUUM CLEANER WITH 464 KW / 631 HP

A synonym for thrilling driving dynamics is above all the performance-enhanced AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine with 464 kW (631 hp) and 635 Newton meters of torque, which is still used in customer sport by Mercedes-AMG to this day. This makes the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series the most powerful AMG high-performance automobile – at least with an internal combustion engine. Only the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with a maximum output of 552 kW ranked above it.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series: not the last

The SLS AMG Coupé  Black Series accelerates to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds. The top speed here is 315 km / h. The increase of 44 kW  (60 hp) compared to the  420 kW (571 hp) SLS AMG could be achieved by the following measures:

  • Increasing the maximum speed from 7200 to 8000 / min
  • Revised high-speed valve train with modified camshafts, adapted cam geometry and optimized bucket tappets with a special coating that is otherwise only used in racing
  • Revision of the intake air duct: dethrottling and adaptation to the new maximum speed
  • Completely redesigned, high-speed-resistant belt drive including all auxiliary units and deflection pulleys
  • Adaptation of the engine application and increase of the peak pressure

The engineers at Mercedes-AMG have further optimized the crank mechanism to ensure the best possible stability during tough racing. This includes modified oil bores in the crankshaft, new crankshaft bearings and high-strength connecting rod fittings. In addition, the complete water and oil cooling of the engine and transmission of the SLS AMG has been further optimized. The AMG V8 engine in the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series also has special support. A gas pressure damper supports the eight-cylinder on the body, so that undesirable load change reactions in a highly dynamic driving style on the racetrack are effectively eliminated.

SPORTS EXHAUST SYSTEM MADE OF TITANIUM

The eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine installed as a front mid-engine behind the front axle fascinates with a racing car-like response and even more pleasure from high engine speeds than before. The powerful AMG V8 engine is also unmistakably inspired acoustically by the racetrack: The AMG sports exhaust system, which was completely redesigned for this purpose and is made for the first time in weight-optimized titanium, is particularly impressive due to its impressive acoustics: the eight-cylinder naturally aspirated engine celebrates the joy of high engine speeds Even more emotional than before: Especially in the spectrum from 5500 revolutions to the cut-off speed at 8000 rpm, the high-speed concept is acoustically even more present and therefore more intense to experience. The higher-frequency sound when accelerating under full load is reminiscent of the engine sound on the race track. The SLS AMG CoupéBlack Seriesfulfills all requirements specific to AMG and still offers its occupants the long-distance comfort that is typical of Mercedes: when driving smoothly, the sound of the AMG V8 engine remains rather reserved. The AMG titanium sports exhaust system has a pipe diameter of 70 millimeters and independent center and rear silencers in a reflective design. The special, high-temperature resistant titanium alloy also plays a large part in the unique acoustic characteristics. In addition, the switch from steel to titanium achieved a significant weight advantage: at just under 17 kilograms, around 13 kilograms were saved compared to the previous AMG sports exhaust system. As before, performance-increasing manifolds are used.

1,550 KILOGRAMS EMPTY WEIGHT

Lightweight construction elsewhere: With an unladen weight of 1,550 kilograms (DIN), the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is not only 70 kilograms lighter than the standard SLS AMG, but also by far the best power-to-weight ratio of all previous AMG Black Series-Vehicles of 2.45 kg per horsepower. This is made possible by the consistent implementation of the “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy. Numerous body elements such as the bonnet, the interior rear wall behind the AMG sports bucket seats, the diagonal struts on the underbody and the torque tube between the engine and transmission are made entirely of carbon, the motor sport material (CFRP = carbon fiber reinforced plastic). Compared to the 26.6 kg counterpart with an aluminum sand cast housing, the carbon torque tube weighs only 13.3 kg.The frictional connection between the engine and the dual clutch gearbox flanged to the rear axle (transaxle principle) is handled by a CFRP drive shaft that weighs only 4.7 kg. Some components in the aluminum spaceframe have also been replaced by CFRP components. A lithium-ion battery, which is used instead of the conventional starter battery, saves another eight kilograms.

MODIFIED SPORTS TRANSMISSION

A significant part of the driving dynamics of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Seriesbut also has the complete power transmission. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is installed ten millimeters lower to lower the center of gravity and is supported on the body by gas pressure dampers to avoid load changes. The dual clutch transmission has four driving programs (C, S, S + and M), especially in “Sport plus” and “Manual” it is even sportier than the models SLS AMG and SLS AMG GT. Not only were the switching times reduced, the shortened response time to switching commands from the driver and the defined switching hardness ensure pure dynamism and an emotional driving experience. The automatic double-declutching function exudes even more emotion when shifting down.

ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED AMG REAR AXLE LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL

A specially developed, electronically controlled AMG rear axle limited slip differential with shorter rear axle ratio replaces the mechanical variant; it is integrated in the compact gearbox. The system works with a variable locking effect in pull and push operation; In addition, the electronics act and react more sensitively than before and enable excellent traction of the drive wheels with all coefficients of friction. Driving safety also benefits from the electronic AMG rear-axle limited slip differential: in slalom or when changing lanes at high speeds, the system has a stabilizing effect because it is able to dampen the yaw rate of the vehicle around the vertical axis. The standard 3-stage ESP® with the functions “ON”, “SPORT Handling Mode” and “OFF” are precisely matched to the electronic AMG rear-axle limited slip differential. The same applies to the RACE START function: It perfects traction when accelerating from a standing position in conjunction with the “E-Diff” – as the electronic limited slip differential is called in technical jargon.

Chassis revised and modifiedThe chassis of the SLS AMG Coupé  Black Series was also newly developed . The basic layout with double wishbones all around in aluminum construction is unchanged, but in the sense of a much higher racetrack performance, hardly any component was left untouched. The new developments in detail:

  • AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension with tighter basic tuning and electronically controlled, two-stage damping (Sport, Sport +) for individual adaptation to your personal driving style
  • Spring plate with thread portion for adjustment of the wheel loads, thus personal race track setup possible
  • Elastokinematics 50% / 42% stiffer (front / rear axle) for more roll stability with fast change curves
  • Gauge plus 20/24 millimeters (front / rear axle) for more grip when cornering quickly
  • New wheel carriers on the front axle and newly tuned anti-roll bar at the front for more grip and less side tilt when cornering quickly
  • AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, in particularly light forging technology with optimized strength, painted matt black and with a high-sheen finish, dimensions: 10 × 19 at the front; 12 × 20 rear. Weight saving: 4.0 kg
  • Newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 sports tires in the format 275/35 R 19 at the front and 325/30 R 20 at the rear, for more grip and sporty cornering limits
  • AMG sports parameter steering with a newly tuned servo characteristic for optimum steering precision and excellent vehicle control

AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system in seriesThe well-known AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system is used as standard in the SLS AMG Black Series. The ceramic brake discs in the dimensions 402 x 39 millimeters at the front and 360 x 32 millimeters at the rear have an even higher temperature resistance due to their higher degree of hardness and impress with their 40 percent lower weight. By reducing the unsprung mass, they optimize both comfort and grip. The reduced rotating masses on the front axle ensure a more direct steering response. The weight saving of the AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system compared to a conventional braking system in steel / aluminum construction is an additional 16 kilograms. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series comes as standard High-performance brake pads are used: They further optimize the stability in tough racing use.Who, by the way, was not able to get hold of an SLS AMG Black Series at the time: There are currently numerous models on the online stock exchanges, even with less than 100 km on the speedometer and with a formal day registration. Nowadays, when it comes to the price, you have to dig deeper than the original price of 249,900 euros at the time – in some cases the price has almost doubled to this day. Also a way of investing.
